Description
Hello! I am a 25 year old English Literature graduate living in Edinburgh. I work as a tutor and write fiction and last year I was selected by the Scottish Book Trust as one of their New Writers of 2015.
When I started secondary school I struggled badly with Maths. It confused me and I hated feeling stupid, so I ignored it. Eventually my parents started looking for a tutor. They booked a young PHD student called Ben.
Ben loved Maths (still does) and turned out to be a patient and dedicated tutor. He helped me get to grips with the subject for the first time in my life, doing wonders for my classroom confidence along the way. It was a hugely valuable experience for me, and I aim to give every one of my students that same boost in the subject which I love - English.
“[My daughter] always looks forward to the sessions with Basil and it is most definitely helping her progress in English and also grow her confidence. Basil is great to have around, he has a good sense of humour and is easygoing but at the same time focused on the work that needs to be done. I can warmly recommend Basil as a tutor.” Karin Sode
MY APPROACH TO TUTORING:
I combine an open, conversational approach to learning with a developed understanding of the demands made of students at each level of their English education. One to one tuition affords students the space to identify and target problem areas specific to them. Consequently, tailored learning is at the heart of my approach. I get to know each student's learning habits so that we can work effectively towards their study goals.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Edinburgh: For two years now I have worked with students of all ages and abilities. Some are preparing for Nationals or Highers, and we work with past papers and mark schemes almost every session, honing exam technique. Others simply want to improve their reading and writing - we read books together, practice comprehension and work on writing assignments.
Whatever your study goals are, I would love to hear from you!
HOURLY RATE
My standard hourly rate for academic tuition is £25.00 per hour, and that applies to all ages.
I also offer language classes to clients of any age looking to improve their English, and these are charged at £25.00 per hour.
